Fusion Regulation in the UK – Hertford Seminar – Dr David Kingham

The RPI can announce the next event in our long-running seminar series, the Hertford Seminars, will take place at the National Liberal Club in London on the 9th July. Hosted by the founder and senior advisor of world leading fusion energy company Tokamak Energy, Dr David Kingham, this session is titled “Fusion Regulation in the UK” This seminar will focus on the successes of the regulatory framework in fusion energy innovation, and what lessons this can teach the wider energy sector, and other regulated sectors.

Fusion energy has the potential to be the ideal energy source of the future, with plentiful fuel, no carbon emissions and a compact form factor. It is also inherently safer than nuclear fission, has relatively low radioactive waste and low weapons proliferation risk.  However, the technology is still far from being ready for commercial deployment.  Dr Kingham will give a private sector perspective of how fusion regulation in the UK has evolved and of how it has become a significant competitive advantage for the UK, while also helping to accelerate development of commercial fusion energy.

To ground this discussion within the academic traditions of economics, and provide a holistic analysis regulatory frameworks within Dr. Kingham’s presentation, Prof. George Yarrow will act as discussant, helping frame the discussion in the room and giving context whereby actors in other regulated sectors, from traditional energy regulation to beyond, can learn lessons applicable to their regulatory activities.

The event at the National Liberal Club will begin at 6:00pm, with arrival from 5:30pm. Tea and coffee will be available on arrival, and complementary wine available after the conclusion of the event to help aid continued discussion.

This event is free of charge and strictly invite only and has limited space, with priority invites and guaranteed spaces available only to RPI Members.
